{"id":798,"date":"2005-09-15T09:59:00","date_gmt":"2005-09-15T09:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2005\/09\/15\/german-elections-roundup\/"},"modified":"2008-02-14T10:04:12","modified_gmt":"2008-02-14T10:04:12","slug":"german-elections-roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2005\/09\/german-elections-roundup\/","title":{"rendered":"German elections roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you know nothing about what&#8217;s going on in Germany or why it&#8217;s important, you could do worse than start with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.signandsight.com\/features\/259.html\">Sign and Sight&#8217;s handy and succinct overview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First up, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eupolitix.com\/EN\/Bulletins\/PressReview\/fullpressreview.htm?bulletindate=15-Sep-2005#Extra+round+mooted+in+German+elections\">Merkel going to push for an extra round?<\/a> She&#8217;s been dropping in the polls of late (which may be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw-world.de\/dw\/article\/0,1564,1710424,00.html\">worrying the markets<\/a>, plus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/main.jhtml?xml=\/news\/2005\/09\/15\/wger15.xml&amp;sSheet=\/portal\/2005\/09\/15\/ixportal.html\">getting into trouble over her flat tax proposals<\/a>, recently so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesharpener.net\/?p=132\">popular in the UK blogosphere<\/a> &#8211; with more in-depth looks at her <a href=\"http:\/\/service.spiegel.de\/cache\/international\/0,1518,374526,00.html\">economic policy woes<\/a> at Der Spiegel.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Guardian (or is it theguardian?) looks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/germany\/article\/0,2763,1570297,00.html\">what went wrong in Germany<\/a> and why &#8220;Everyone is afraid&#8221;, even though the Financial Times reckons that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.ft.com\/cms\/s\/10eb1d2c-2546-11da-98dc-00000e2511c8.html\">Schr\u00ef\u00bf\u00bdder&#8217;s legacy will be a good one<\/a> and Der Spiegel reckons <a href=\"http:\/\/service.spiegel.de\/cache\/international\/0,1518,374399,00.html\">Germany&#8217;s a lot better off than it thinks it is<\/a> in a nice comparison of Merkel and Maggie (as in Thatcher, natch).<\/p>\n<p>(As an odd aside &#8211; largely for the eurosceptics to get heated up &#8211; the eurosceptic Times wonders if <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/article\/0,,13509-1780747,00.html\">the Turkish vote will save the pro-Turkish entry Schr\u00ef\u00bf\u00bdder<\/a>, while Newropeans magazine bemoans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newropeans-magazine.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=2679&amp;Itemid=110\">the inability of non-German EU citizens to vote on Sunday<\/a>, and in national elections full stop.)<\/p>\n<p>Over at Fistful, Alex gives an overview of the <a href=\"http:\/\/fistfulofeuros.net\/archives\/001886.php\">squabbles over potential coalitions<\/a> following Edward&#8217;s look at the implications of Merkel <a href=\"http:\/\/fistfulofeuros.net\/archives\/001884.php\">missing an overall majority<\/a> and Tobias&#8217; top-notch look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/fistfulofeuros.net\/archives\/001871.php\">problems with her campaign<\/a>.
