Asked last week who he thought was most likely to succeed him, the president smiled widely and replied, &#8220;I think that subject is altogether premature.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not, of course, so check out this lengthy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/story\/cms.php?story_id=3112&amp;print=1\">profile of likely successor Nicholas Sarkozy in Foreign Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile in Spain it&#8217;s Church vs. State all over again as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/articles\/2005\/jul2005\/spai-j16.shtml\">the Pope tackles socialism<\/a> (well, Gay marriage at any rate), while <a href=\"http:\/\/logicvoice.blogspot.com\/\">A Logical Voice<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/logicvoice.blogspot.com\/\">Dear Kitty<\/a> are planning to take on pollution by <a href=\"http:\/\/bloggingforgreenpeace.blogspot.com\/\">Blogging for Greenpeace<\/a> as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogathon.org\/\">2005 Blogathon<\/a>, so give them some support and stuff.<\/p>\n<p>And if you want a struggle, how about trying to get to grips with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/finance\/displayStory.cfm?story_id=4174785\">the workings of the European Central Bank&#8217;s monetary policy<\/a>, via The Economist? Or how about a look at how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiked-online.com\/Articles\/0000000CABCA.htm\">the political elite is ignoring the people<\/a> (rather bizarrely that article seems to think this is a new phenomenon&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Or why not try some of the quandries on show at the <a href=\"http:\/\/dinnertabledonts.blogspot.com\/\">Philosophers&#8217; Carnival<\/a> or the many fascinating tidbits at the <a href=\"http:\/\/modeforcaleb.blogspot.com\/2005\/07\/history-carnival-xii.html\">History Carnival<\/a>. While you&#8217;re doing that, and in the spirit of Proms season, you could update your classical music library at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classiccat.net\/\">Classic Cat<\/a>. Good stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Anne Applebaum&#8217;s attempts to work out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/story\/cms.php?story_id=3080\">the world&#8217;s attitude to America<\/a> are rather entertaining. Loads of statistics, lots of theories, but somehow manages to avoid the basic answer: we like America but we hate Bush. I&#8217;d have thought that was obvious by now?<\/p>\n<p><b>Update:<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/timworstall.typepad.com\/timworstall\/2005\/07\/britblog_roundu_2.html\">Britblog Roundup 22<\/a> is good to go, courtesy, as per usual, of one Mr. T.
