(And will he soon disappear for re-education <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/europe\/html\/031117\/story.html\">like other critics of the regime<\/a> or be <a href=\"http:\/\/europhobia.blogspot.com\/2004\/09\/russia-land-of-free.html\">silenced by other methods<\/a>, one wonders?)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/cs\/CDA\/ssistory.mpl\/business\/energy\/2981328\">Yukos is left at a loss over how to get out of this one<\/a> &#8211; as Illarionov rightly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washtimes.com\/upi-breaking\/20050104-103233-5186r.htm\">pointed out<\/a>, &#8220;This entire affair regrettably demonstrates that any of the official or semiofficial explanations given to the public regarding the Yukos affair do not have a leg to stand on&#8221;. The same could be said about official Russian proclamations on pretty much any aspect of society.<\/p>\n<p>Putin&#8217;s style of government is becoming increasingly reminiscent of the tactics of the Soviets under which he first made a name for himself. Perhaps <a href=\"http:\/\/quickstart.clari.net\/qs_se\/webnews\/wed\/cs\/Qrussia-us-opposition.RczL_DSN.html\">the best Christmas present the West could offer ordinary Russians<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsj.org\/AuxPages\/121403WPost_Putin.shtml\">finally to condemn Putin<\/a> for what he is &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsj.org\/AuxPages\/092603WPost_Putin.shtml\">a thoroughly unpleasant bastard<\/a>. I mean, hey &#8211; we got rid of Saddam because he was a tyrant &#8211; why not the equally <a href=\"http:\/\/ap.tbo.com\/ap\/breaking\/MGBFAZ2FN2E.html\">undemocratic<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/yaleglobal.yale.edu\/display.article?id=3855\">autocratic<\/a> Putin?<\/p>\n<p>But then again, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headlines04\/1217-01.htm\">we really, really can&#8217;t risk pissing him off&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And to celebrate, why not check out a rather good round-up of how Vladimir Putin seems to be following in the fine tradition of psychotic Russian despots?
