Poor love.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorvee.co.uk\/index.php?p=34\">DoctorVee has a round-up of last night&#8217;s immediate responses from the Bloggosphere<\/a> &#8211; sadly including mine before I noticed that in cutting and pasting I&#8217;d lopped off the end of a sentence &#8211; something Blunkett would never do (boom boom!).<\/p>\n<p>However, initial <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk_politics\/4100629.stm\">hopes of an end to the ID card madness have been shattered<\/a>. I sort of knew that they&#8217;d still go ahead with it, but still&#8230; I rather hoped some sense would be seen.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, Charles Clarke is the man who, as Education Secretary, seemed to miss the entire point of higher education when he said <a href=\"http:\/\/education.guardian.co.uk\/higher\/artsandhumanities\/story\/0,12241,952781,00.html\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t mind there being some medievalists around for ornamental purposes, but there is no reason for the state to pay for them&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coming soon from Home Secretary Clarke: &#8220;I don&#8217;t mind there being some civil liberties around for ornamental purposes, but there is no reason for the state to protect them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On the day that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.co.uk\/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&amp;storyID=639272\">Law Lords are due to rule<\/a> whether the government&#8217;s suspension of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.constitution.org\/eng\/habcorpa.htm\">habeas corpus<\/a> for &#8220;terror suspects&#8221; at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk\/resourcecentre\/pressreleases\/index.asp?id=2022,230,608,242,0,0\">Wandsworth prison<\/a> (dubbed &#8220;Britain&#8217;s Guantanamo&#8221;) is actually legal, Blair hardly looks like he&#8217;s trying to appease those of his critics who see the growing power of the state to keep tabs on its citizens and imprison them at will as a move towards a police state.<\/p>\n<p>But hey &#8211; it&#8217;s the <b>terrorists<\/b> who hate freedom, right?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manic at Bloggerheads reads the Sun so I don&#8217;t have to.
