It&#8217;s astonishingly insulting and very funny. Only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/theguide\/columnists\/story\/0,,1333748,00.html\">this week&#8217;s column&#8217;s musings on George Bush<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr &#8211; where are you now that we need you&#8221; &#8211; gets him picked up on the bleeding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drudgereport.com\/\">Drudge Report<\/a> as The Guardian advocating assassinating the President. Rightwingers start <a href=\"http:\/\/littlegreenfootballs.com\/weblog\/?entry=13269_Guardian_Calls_for_Bush_to_Be_Assassinated#comments\">discussing<\/a> exactly what they should do about Mr Brooker. I&#8217;m guessing his email inbox is going to keep him in fresh new insults for months.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, The Guardian is well aware that it has a substantial American readership via the internet. It brags about it often enough. Its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/uselections2004\/story\/0,13918,1326033,00.html\">Operation<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/20\/politics\/campaign\/20brits.html\">Clark<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/g2\/story\/0,,1331922,00.html\">County<\/a> articles were much noted and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/comment\/story\/0,,1334135,00.html\">coverage<\/a> in the paper entirely predictable (it&#8217;s fairly obvious that they always wanted the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/g2\/story\/0,,1329728,00.html\">idiot email responses<\/a>: it helps fill up the paper printing them). <a href=\"http:\/\/rylibweb.man.ac.uk\/data2\/spcoll\/guardian\/\">The Manchester Guardian<\/a> left its provincial moorings behind in the wake of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/timelines\/britain\/post_suez.shtml\">the Suez Crisis<\/a> to become metropolitan.
