{"id":1641,"date":"2007-09-18T14:48:53","date_gmt":"2007-09-18T14:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2007\/09\/18\/back-from-brussels-and-a-new-nosemonkey-blog\/"},"modified":"2008-02-02T13:19:25","modified_gmt":"2008-02-02T13:19:25","slug":"back-from-brussels-and-a-new-nosemonkey-blog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2007\/09\/back-from-brussels-and-a-new-nosemonkey-blog\/","title":{"rendered":"Back from Brussels &#8211; and a new Nosemonkey blog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jcm.org.uk\/pics\/grandplace.jpg\" alt=\"The Grand Place, Brussels\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A delightful time was had by all at last night&#8217;s launch debate\/party for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomorrowseurope.eu\/\">Tomorrow&#8217;s Europe<\/a> in Brussels &#8211; except my feet, which got pounded by the picturesque Brussels cobbles (thanks to be being too cheap to get a taxi) and then soaked by the decidedly less picturesque Brussels rain (for the self-same reason).<\/p>\n<p>An array of intriguing people also met, from high-profile politicos through to the chap behind tip-top French superblog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurosduvillage.com\/\">Euros du Village<\/a>, and in my absence <a href=\"http:\/\/opendemocracy.net\/blog\/dliberation\">the new project that took me to Belgium has gone live<\/a>, so go have a look-see:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/opendemocracy.net\/blog\/dliberation\">dLiberation<\/a> &#8211; a Nosemonkey-edited look at deliberative democracy, EU participation, and the future of the European Union, brought to you by <a href=\"http:\/\/opendemocracy.net\/\">openDemocracy<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got two vaguely introductory posts up so far, which should give you an idea of what we&#8217;re hoping to achieve, with many more to follow &#8211; from me and a range of experts from academics to MEPs through a few choice Brussels bureaucrats, bloggers and more. Go have a gander:<br \/>\n<center><strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/opendemocracy.net\/blog\/dliberation\/intro\">Introduction to dLiberation<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/opendemocracy.net\/blog\/j_clive_matthews\/cloudy_skies_over_tomorrows_europe\">Cloudy skies over tomorrow&#8217;s Europe<\/a><br \/>\n<\/center><\/strong><!--more--><br \/>\nNext up, later today, will be <a href=\"http:\/\/communication.stanford.edu\/faculty\/fishkin.html\">Professor James Fishkin<\/a> of Stanford University &#8211; the mastermind of <a href=\"http:\/\/cdd.stanford.edu\/\">Deliberative Polling<\/a> &#8211; explaining the basic thinking behind the methodology of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomorrowseurope.eu\/\">Tomorrow&#8217;s Europe<\/a> event, around which the blog will be focussing its attention.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve also got a fair few posts lined up looking at the content of last night&#8217;s debate, featuring the likes of EU constitution mastermind and former President of France <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Val%C3%A9ry_Giscard_d'Estaing\">Val\u00c3\u00a9ry Giscard d&#8217;Estaing<\/a>, current Italian Interior Minister <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giuliano_Amato\">Giuliano Amato<\/a>, blogging commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ec.europa.eu\/wallstrom\/\">Margot Wallstr\u00c3\u00b6m<\/a> (whom I accosted last night and got an assurance that she&#8217;d try to contribute to the dLiberation blog), and the entertaining Danish eurosceptic MEP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bonde.com\/\">Jens-Peter Bonde<\/a> (from whom I also extracted a promise to write for us).<\/p>\n<p>Should be fun &#8211; that link again: <a href=\"http:\/\/opendemocracy.net\/blog\/dliberation\">dLiberation<\/a> &#8211; pop over and help me kick-start a much-needed debate about the role of democracy in the future of the EU.
