Sorry &#8211; my computer crashed again and ate that one. (And I&#8217;d been loosely working on it since I first heard <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/europe\/6586181.stm\">the news<\/a> yesterday afternoon and all&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Instead, have a couple of clips that work as perfect encapsulations of both Yeltsin and Russia &#8211; the first, amiable lack of comprehension, but keenness to be seen to be in on whatever it is everyone else is banging on about ; the second, the initially entertaining unpredictability which is all good fun until you realise that this guy had his finger on the big red button&#8230;<br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<object width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/IgGZKPwpvoc\"><\/param><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/IgGZKPwpvoc\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" wmode=\"transparent\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><\/embed><\/object><br \/>\n<object width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/eZ5S-_RLddQ\"><\/param><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/eZ5S-_RLddQ\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" wmode=\"transparent\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><\/embed><\/object><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\nYep &#8211; Yeltsin was the perfect leader for Russia: drunk, a bit stupid, highly unpredictable, almost certainly extremely dangerous, and practically impossible to work out. Just like Russia itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> Go on then, have a mini roundup of good reactions &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/russtech.blogspot.com\/\">Ruminations on Russia<\/a> puts him in context (though sadly no permanent link that I can find to the post, so check quickly), <a href=\"http:\/\/bloodandtreasure.typepad.com\/blood_treasure\/2007\/04\/severe_insult_t.html\">Blood and Treasure<\/a> is somewhat dry (unlike Boris, of course), <a href=\"http:\/\/seansrusskiiblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/04\/boris-yeltsin-dead-at-76.html\">Sean<\/a> is very good too, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertamsterdam.com\/2007\/04\/boris_yeltsin_19312007.htm\">Robert Amsterdam<\/a> has a roundup of press reactions, and <a href=\"http:\/\/flyingrodent.blogspot.com\/2007\/04\/we-all-got-it-comin-kid.html\">the Flying Rodent<\/a> is &#8211; as so often &#8211; pretty much spot on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Expecting insightful analysis about Yeltsin&#8217;s place in history?
