Today they&#8217;ve got an election. Polls close in about an hour and a half, so it&#8217;s about to get interesting. (Well, <a href=\"http:\/\/euronews.net\/index.php?page=info&#038;article=412131&#038;lng=1\">possibly<\/a>&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the way this is all likely to work out, we could well see a new Prime Minister emerge by the morning &#8211; which would mean that the EU loses one of its most sensible contributors, the self-described &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2006\/11\/21\/europragmaticsm\/\">Euro-pragmatist<\/a>&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matti_Vanhanen\">Matti Vanhanen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, there could well be a wider impact than just a few alterations to the reindeer supply&#8230; Worth paying attention to.<\/p>\n<p>First up, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/aapocalypsenow.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/theyve-got-issues.html\">Aapotsikko&#8217;s overview of the key issues<\/a>, plus <a href=\"http:\/\/aapocalypsenow.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/prognostication-time.html\">predictions<\/a>. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.finlandforthought.net\/\">Finland for Thought<\/a> also has some decent election coverage.)<\/p>\n<p>Then follow the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vaalit.fi\/14173.htm\">results as they come in<\/a>, and keep an eye on Finnish newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hs.fi\/english\/\">Helsingen Sannomat<\/a> (in English), plus this useful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yle.fi\/news\/election\/index.html\">news site<\/a> (and <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.finland.fi\/news\/\">another<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Finnish_parliamentary_election%2C_2007\">page<\/a> on the elections is also likely to be helpful to those of us who don&#8217;t really know much about Finnish politics.<\/p>\n<p>Any other suggestions of handy Finnish sites much appreciated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10 pm Update:<\/strong> Well <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/europe\/6463465.stm\">that was quick<\/a> &#8211; two hours after the polls closed, 99% of the votes counted, and it looks like Vanhannen stays in by just one seat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update 2:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/aapocalypsenow.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/historic-centre-right-triumph.html\">Aapotsikko&#8217;s back with context and analysis<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two days ago marked the 100th anniversary of parliamentary democracy in Finland.
