I’ve spent the last few days watching a vast number of war films for an article I’m doing (deadline today… time to start writing… damn…). I’ve done the whole range, from Lawrence of Arabia<\/a> and The Birth of a Nation<\/a> through Dr Stranglove<\/a>, The Guns of Navarone<\/a>, Barry Lyndon<\/a>, The Battle of Algiers<\/a>, Ice Station Zebra<\/a>, Black Hawk Down<\/a>, Apocalypse Now<\/a>, and God alone knows how many others – including a few that are only tangentially war films, like The Manchurian Candidate<\/a>. Then, having pondered various other old favourites, like Platoon<\/a>, Full Metal Jacket<\/a>, All Quiet on the Western Front<\/a>, Duck Soup<\/a>, A Bridge Too Far<\/a>, The General<\/a>, The Longest Day<\/a>, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly<\/a>, Zulu<\/a> and the like, I have finally reached a conclusion.
