{"id":1409,"date":"2006-12-01T17:00:43","date_gmt":"2006-12-01T17:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2006\/12\/01\/ukraine-again\/"},"modified":"2006-12-01T19:33:03","modified_gmt":"2006-12-01T19:33:03","slug":"ukraine-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2006\/12\/ukraine-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2004\/11\/22\/breaking-news-military-backed-coup-in-the-ukraine\/\">Two years and one week ago:<\/a> confusion as the Orange revolution kicked off, as supporters of Viktor Yushchenko &#8211; now the president &#8211; took to the streets to protest apparent vote-rigging by the then prime minister Viktor Yanukovich <small>(now prime minister again following a compromise deal earlier this year)<\/small>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orangeukraine.squarespace.com\/journal\/2006\/11\/22\/orange-day.html\">One week ago:<\/a> &#8220;Sad to see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rferl.org\/newsline\/2006\/11\/5-not\/not-201106.asp\">this<\/a> in the news two years after the Orange Revolution&#8230; But it&#8217;s not all doom and gloom. The advances made in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orangeukraine.squarespace.com\/journal\/2005\/11\/22\/happy-orange-day.html\">first year<\/a> have not been overturned this year. The media is still more evenhanded than it was. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orangeukraine.squarespace.com\/journal\/2006\/4\/3\/unpleasant-coalition-choices-for-blocs.html\">March election<\/a> was indeed a fair one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/europe\/6198294.stm\">Today:<\/a> &#8220;Ukraine&#8217;s parliament has dismissed the foreign and interior ministers &#8211; key allies of President Viktor Yushchenko.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rferl.org\/featuresarticle\/2006\/12\/25026d56-9c9a-41dd-b706-74b01c6e5f09.html\">And more:<\/a> &#8220;[Sacked Foreign Minister Borys] Tarasyuk <span id=\"ContentLabel\">said the parliament was launching a &#8216;war&#8217; against President Viktor Yushchenko to seize some of his power. He called on all democratic forces to join hands in preventing a &#8216;rollback of democracy.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vote follows a request by Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych to fire Tarasyuk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This, of course, all coming as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jcm.org.uk\/blog\/\">Yanukovych visits his supposed close ally Putin in Moscow<\/a> &#8211; and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rferl.org\/featuresarticle\/2006\/12\/b757de67-de0b-4320-b3e9-b717e65a4cd3.html\">same day<\/a> that former Russian Prime Minister &#8220;Mikhail Kasyanov called on the opposition to boycott next year&#8217;s parliamentary elections. Kasyanov told the Reuters news agency that the vote would be an &#8216;imitation of democracy.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kasyanov, head of the opposition People\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Democratic Union, said in Moscow that the Kremlin would manipulate the poll to ensure that only loyal parties win seats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just spies being taken out with radiation poisoning &#8211; there are moves afoot in the former Soviet Union. Quite what moves, I have no idea.
