\nTheir dread Commander: he above the rest
\nIn shape and gesture proudly eminent
\nStood like a Towr; his form had yet not lost
\nAll her Original brightness, nor appear’d
\nLess then Arch Angel ruind<\/strong>, and th’ excess
\nOf Glory obscur’d: As when the Sun new ris’n
\nLooks through the Horizontal misty Air
\nShorn of his Beams, or from behind the Moon
\nIn dim Eclips disastrous twilight sheds
\nOn half the Nations, and with fear of change<\/strong>
\nPerplexes Monarchs. Dark’n’d so, yet shon
\nAbove them all<\/strong> th’ Arch Angel: but his face
\nDeep scars of Thunder had intrencht, and care
\nSat on his faded cheek<\/strong>, but under Browes
\nOf dauntless courage, and considerate Pride<\/strong>
\nWaiting revenge: cruel his eye, but cast
\nSigns of remorse and passion to behold
\nThe fellows of his crime<\/strong>, the followers rather
\n(Far other once beheld in bliss) condemn’d
\nFor ever now to have their lot in pain,
\nMillions of Spirits for his fault amerc’t
\nOf Heav’n, and from Eternal Splendors flung
\nFor his revolt, yet faithfull how they stood,
\nTheir Glory witherd<\/strong>. As when Heavens Fire
\nHath scath’d the Forrest Oaks, or Mountain Pines,
\nWith singed top their stately growth though bare
\nStands on the blasted Heath. He now prepar’d
\nTo speak<\/a>; whereat their doubl’d Ranks they bend
\nFrom Wing to Wing, and half enclose him round
\nWith all his Peers: attention held them mute.<\/p>\n
