{"id":1004,"date":"2005-12-31T11:52:00","date_gmt":"2005-12-31T11:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2005\/12\/31\/uk-government-torture-deception-update\/"},"modified":"2005-12-31T11:52:00","modified_gmt":"2005-12-31T11:52:00","slug":"uk-government-torture-deception-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jcm.org.uk\/blog\/2005\/12\/uk-government-torture-deception-update\/","title":{"rendered":"UK government torture deception update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloggerheads.com\/archives\/2005\/12\/the_subect_is_t.asp\">A good round-up from Tim Ireland<\/a>, and more on that Enron memo from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.craigmurray.co.uk\/archives\/2005\/12\/more_old_news.html\">Murray himself<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/leninology.blogspot.com\/2005\/12\/torture-documents-hit-news-more-on.html\">Lenin<\/a> which are worth a look.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press has now picked up on the story, and via its newswires this is cropping up in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/world\/2005-12-31-uk-envoy-publish-documents_x.htm\">USA Today<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory?id=1458447\">ABC<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/worldlatest\/story\/0,1280,-5514374,00.html\">The Guardian<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/world\/wire\/sns-ap-britain-torture-claims,1,4625910.story?coll=sns-ap-world-headlines\">The LA Times<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2005\/12\/31\/ap\/world\/mainD8ER5V484.shtml\">CBS<\/a>. Oh, and surprisingly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/tm_objectid=16535426&amp;method=full&amp;siteid=94762&amp;headline=ex-ambassador--straw-knew-we-used-info-from-torturers--name_page.html\">The Mirror seems to have got the most accurate headline<\/a>: &#8220;EX-AMBASSADOR: STRAW KNEW WE USED INFO FROM TORTURERS&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Mirror also notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In October 2004 Mr Straw denied Mr Murray&#8217;s allegations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He told MPs Britain would &#8216;never use torture in order to obtain information&#8217; and added: &#8216;Nor would we instigate others to commit torture for that purpose.&#8217; But in a 2003 memo, Foreign Office legal advisor Sir Michael Wood tells the ambassador it is only unlawful if such information is used in court cases.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, please note that the anonymous Foreign Office spokesman mentioned in the Press Association report is explicitly contradicting Foreign Secretary Jack Straw&#8217;s earlier pronouncements on the UK&#8217;s use of torture when he\/she puts forth the new government line:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;while Britain condemns the use of torture, it would be &#8216;irresponsible&#8217; for the intelligence services to reject out of hand information which might protect British citizens from a terror attack.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There may be an argument for using information obtained by torture in such circumstances, though it is not a particularly convincing one, but that is not the point. The point is the government has been caught in a lie about its use of immorally and illegally-obtained information &#8211; and they&#8217;re digging themselves deeper into a hole with it with every passing day.
